Oahe (ō wä’ hē) takes its name from the Oahe Indian Mission established in 1874 among Lakota Sioux Indians.  “Oahe” roughly translated is “a foundation or a place to stand on”.

The Oahe Dam, located four miles north of Pierre on the Missouri River stretches 1.8 miles across and 245 feet high and is a source of hydroelectric power and provides flood control, improvement of navigation and irrigation to the central South Dakota region.  Construction for the Oahe Dam began in 1948 by the Corps of Engineers and was completed fourteen years later in 1962

Lake Oahe, the reservoir created by the Oahe Dam, stretches 250 miles upstream to Bismarck, North Dakota.  It is the fourth largest man-made reservoir in the United States and has 2,250 miles shoreline, which is more than the coast of California.

Oahe Speedway is a 1/4 mile National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) dragstrip opened in 2005 and serves racers and the racing community in South Dakota and surrounding states.  Oahe Speedway is honored to host the Red Willow Band as the Inaugural concert at the new “Meadow at Oahe Speedway”.
